FAQ

Hi,

Thank you for visiting my website. I believe you might have some questions in mind when engaging a guitar teacher for your children or even yourself. I have compiled some of the most popular questions asked by students in general and hopefully this can help you in deciding a guitar teacher and lessons within your budget.

1) How are the lessons conducted?
Generally, the lesson is one-to-one lesson conducted at my home studio located in Tampines, Singapore. Alternatively, it can also be conducted over popular online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Skype etc.

For beginners, I would strongly recommend to start off your guitar learning journey via a face-to-face lesson so as to ensure some foundation is set in place first before taking it online.

2) What are the major costs involved in guitar classes?
The major cost will be investing in a guitar itself. There are different types of guitars in general; electric, classical, acoustic etc and many brands and models to choose from. But not to worry at this point if you just pick up this instrument - Always start with something you can afford and within a comfortable budget. Apart from this, the other major cost will be travel fees.

As soon as you start playing the guitar, there will also be additional costs involved such as string replacement, repairs (if needed) and probably examinations. But not to worry, as I can help to do routine checks on students' guitars to make sure it is well maintained for optimal playing.

3) How to minimize maintenance costs of guitars?
Part of my lessons is to provide practical tips on how to take care of your instruments. Some helpful tips include regulating the temperature of the room where the guitar is kept and basic cleaning of fretboard, strings and finishes. This is one of the modules provided in my lesson plans.

4) Do I provide instruments for students to use?
It is advisable for students to get their own guitars so that they can also practise at home.

5) Is it necessary to focus on music theory?
Yes! Music theory is definitely an essential part in learning the guitar and music. However, you will be surprised that some famous rock stars (e.g., Elvis Presley, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and even Slash) do not have formal music theory backgrounds and they compose and play music merely by ear and from experiences.

In my lessons, I provide strong technical exercises coupled with music theory to help reinforce the understanding of music. Some instructors might focus on music theory first; going through all the concepts of song and melody creation while others might choose to teach their students simple strumming and chords first. There's no one right approach to this; My teaching philosophy is always to get students to enjoy the lessons, have fun and build up their musical knowledge and technical skills.

Of course, there'll be relevant books which I find it useful for guitar players and I will strongly recommend to students if they wish to take it up to the next level.

6) I'm looking for an exceptional guitar teacher who can play all the songs!
The truth is guitar teachers are always learning and exploring the guitars. No one can claim that he has mastered the guitar; not even guitar legends! There's always new stuff to learn, be it licks, riffs, styles, chords, improvisations etc. No teacher is perfect. I am not but music teachers and professional players always strive to unlearn and relearn the guitar. REMEMBER: - Learning is for Life!!

My philosophy in teaching guitar is; I strive to unlock each student's potential by always challenging himself/herself beyond his strength and weakness and the progress is to always improve after every time you pick up the guitar. By recognising the strengths and weaknesses of a student is also a critical aspect in building a customised lesson plan for his musical advancement. It's absolutely not a problem for a student to excel or even outperform the teacher. To be honest, I will be really proud to have such students!
